Upload & Analyze Files in Gemini Apps

You can upload documents, spreadsheets, photos, videos, and more to Gemini Apps to get answers, summaries, and insights about your content.

What you need

Important: There are limits for how much you can use features like uploading files or asking Gemini Apps to reference uploaded files. Learn more about limits.

• Must sign in to Gemini Apps with your New School NetID and password

Upload files & code

1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.

2. In the text box at the bottom, enter your question or prompt.

3. Click Add files .

• To upload a supported file from your device: click Files .

• To add a supported file from your Google Drive: click Drive.

  • To add files from your Drive, you need to have Gemini Apps Activity on and connect Google Workspace to Gemini Apps. If it’s not connected, you'll get the option to connect it.

4. Click Submit.

Tip: You can add up to 10 of any kind of supported file in the same prompt, such as documents, images, or videos.

File types & upload limits

• Gemini Apps support most file types.

• Up to 10 files can be uploaded in the same prompt.

• Each video can be up to 2 GB. All other supported file types can be up to 100 MB.

• Total video length can be up to 5 minutes.

• ZIP files can contain up to 10 files.

File upload error messages

• “You’ve reached your limit for chats with files”

  • There are rolling limits for how much you can upload and analyze files in a period of time. After some time, the limit will reset, and you will be able to upload and analyze files again.

• “Your uploads may be too large for the best results”

  • If you try to upload a file that is too large, Gemini may provide a response that misses connections or details throughout the content. This is most relevant for prompts that require attention to many details scattered throughout large file(s).

• What does it mean when my prompt exceeds the context window?

  • you might get a message that you’ve exceeded the context window for uploading and analyzing files. Learn more about context windows and other Gemini limitations.
