Summary

Body

Use this article to understand how to control who sends invitations to your Google Calendar. This article also explains how to limit access to pending invitations on your calendar and unmark senders as known, to avoid unwanted invitations and spam.

Note: Your updated settings only apply to new invitations.

Manage your Calendar invitations

Google calendar has settings that allow you to manage who can automatically add invites to your calendar.

Adding Calendar Invite Options

  • RECOMMENDED - Only if the sender is known: Events are automatically added to your calendar if the sender is in your contacts, part of The New School organization (i.e. they send an invite from an @newschool.edu address), or someone you previously interacted with.

    • After you mark a sender as known or you interact with them, future invitations from that sender are automatically added to your calendar.

    • If an event isn’t added to your calendar, you get an invitation email. The event will be added to your calendar when accepted in the email invite.

  • RECOMMENDED - When I respond to the invitation in email: An event is added to your calendar only after you respond to the email notification.

  • NOT RECOMMENDED - From everyone: All invitations are automatically added to your calendar.

Computers

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.

  2. At the top right, click Settings  > Settings.

  3. On the left, under “General,” click Event settings > Add invitations to my calendar.

  4. Select an option listed above.

Android & iOS

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Calendar app Calendar.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu  > Settings .
  3. Tap General > Adding invitations > Add invitations to my calendar.
  4. Select an option listed above.

Limit visibility for pending Calendar invitations

When you share your calendar, you can choose whether to show only the events that are visible on your calendar, or all events, including invitations from unknown senders or invitations that you haven’t responded to and aren't yet visible on your calendar. This option appears under “Add invitations to my calendar” when you select When I respond to the invitation in email or Only if the sender is known.

Note

  • People who only have permission to find your availability can’t get event details. Learn about sharing permissions.
  • When you allow others to find your event invitations, they may be aware of events that are not added to your calendar yet. This is helpful if they manage incoming event invitations in your calendar.

Computer

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top right, click Settings  > Settings.
  3. On the left, under “General,” click Event settings.
  4. Turn off Let others see all invitations if they have permission to view or edit my events.

Unmark a sender as known

If you accidentally click I know the sender, but don’t trust the contact:

  1. Go to contacts.google.com.
  2. At the top left, click Main menu  > Other contacts.
  3. To the right of the person’s contact info, click More actions More > Delete > Delete.
