How to use Duo

There are various ways to use Duo multi-factor authentication depending on the devices enrolled to your account. Duo will always default to the most secure method and authentication options based on your enrolled devices and security settings. Please see below for details on how to authenticate.

In order to use Duo multi-factor authentication, you will first need to enroll a device and download the Duo mobile app. Please follow these instructions to learn how to enroll a device with Duo

Once you have a device enrolled, you will automatically be prompted to use Duo multi-factor authentication when logging into an application where multi-factor authentication is required.

Important: Updated Multi-factor Experience

Starting in May 2026, The university is transitioning to a new Single Sign-On (SSO) platform. Duo Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) will continue to be used, though you may see updates to the log in experience depending on the system you access. Below you will see information on what to expect with the new experience.

The enrolled Duo devices and authentication methods you have already set up will remain the same throughout the transition.

New Experience

This experience will begin going into effect starting May 18, 2026.

Available Authentication Options:

The exact option available depends on the device type and operating system being used and has been set up with your Duo account. If you need to select another multi-factor option that you have set up on your account, click on the other options link.

Please see below for more info on options for Multi Factor Authentication.

Universal Prompt

Please note: If you have more than one device enrolled in Duo multi-factor you will see available options listed to select.

Touch ID/Facial Recognition/Biometric

Duo supports biometric authentication on compatible devices. Biometrics allow users to verify their identity using a fingerprint or facial recognition instead of approving a push notification or entering a passcode. When supported, Duo works with the device’s built-in security system and password manager to securely manage authentication credentials.

Biometric options may include:

  • Fingerprint recognition
  • Facial recognition
  • secure system unlock

Registering Touch ID also registers Face ID if you currently use Face ID on your device.

Depending on the option your device supports, you'll either scan your face to use Face ID while logging in, or you'll scan your fingerprint instead to use Touch ID.

Andriod prompt

Follow the device's prompt to scan your fingerprint or use facial recognition and select continue to log in.

Duo Push

When logging into New School services, a numberic code will display on the devince you are logging in on when you choose to use Duo Push option.

*Please note: IT Central does not sell security keys.

When using a security key, insert security key into your device you are logging in on and tap/press your security key when prompted and select continue to log in.

To keep information secure, The New School requires that all students and employees use multi-factor authentication when accessing certain university systems that may contain sensitive and/or Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This additional layer of security ensures that even if your password information is compromised, there is a second step of verification to help prevent unauthorized account access.
