Understanding Print Points

The university uses a Print Point charge system to help curb waste and support the sustainability efforts of the university while allowing you to print your course assignments. 

Print Points can be Allocated or Purchased. 

Allocated Print Points

Open Campus/Non-credit students and Alumni may purchase a print card in any of the campus libraries to print. 

• When are Print Points allocated? All Print Points are allocated automatically at the start of the semester. 
• Unused Allocated Print Points: Are carried over between semesters, up to a maximum of 300 Allocated Print Points. 
• Where do Allocated Print Points come from? Allocated Print Points carry no monetary value. They DO NOT come from student tuition or any university fees, and are therefore NOT reimbursable. 
• Why is it 150 print points? The 150 print point amount of the allocation per semester was decided by and agreed upon by all departments at The New School.

* This allocation amount may be less if you have more than 150 left accumulated from previous semesters. (i.e., if you have 200 left from summer, you will be allocated 100 Print Points in fall instead of 150 to account for the maximum of 300.

Purchase Print Points

You can​​​​ purchase print points in increments of $5.00 to $100.00.
Print Points are purchased at a 1-to-1 ratio: $5.00 = 5 Print Points.
There is no limit to how many Purchased Print Points can be purchased for academic purposes.  
All unused Purchased Print Points carry over between semesters (can be in excess of the 300 Allocated Print Points). 

Print Point FAQ

Can a non-credit student print in the labs? 

No. Non-credit students do not have access to lab printing. Alumni and non-degree-seeking students can purchase a print card in the New School library at 63 Fifth Ave. 6th floor and print at one of the library printers. 

Can I transfer or give my Print Points to a colleague or another student?  

No. Print Points cannot be transferred between print accounts. 

I printed from my student or faculty print account for my department, OCSE job, or FWS job. Can IT credit my print points?

For any prints made for a department, the department would be responsible for the cost via their departmental budget.

To add the print points back to your account.
A department employee who has access to a department credit card (P-Card) would have to work with you to purchase print points to your account.
This is the same process as when you purchase print points to your account, but instead of using your own credit card, they use their P-Card.
The outcome is that the print points are added to your account, but the cost for the print points is incurred by the department.

​I am graduating or have graduated (am an alum). Can I get reimbursed for the print points I have left unused?
Sorry, no. Neither allocated nor purchased print points are eligible to be reimbursed.

Print points do not come from any student tuition or university fees.

When graduating or separating from the university

Graduating Students

• Allocated Print Points will expire upon conferral of the degree. 
• Purchased Print Points will expire upon conferral of the degree. 
• Allocated Print Points are not eligible to be refunded. 
• Purchased Print Points are not eligible to be refunded. 
• Caution should be used when buying Purchased Print Points. 

Faculty and Staff 

• Allocated Print Points will expire upon separation. 
• Purchased Print Points will expire upon separation. 
• Allocated Print Points are not eligible to be refunded. 
• Purchased Print Points are not eligible to be refunded. 
• Caution should be used when buying Purchased Print Points.
