How to Set Up Duo

This step-by-step guide shows you how to enroll and manage devices in Duo Security using multi-factor authentication.

Duo Mobile App & Phone 

If you are setting up a phone to use the phone callback multi-factor option, please follow these steps up to step 7. 

1. Go to the Duo Enrollment and Device Management Site and click Enroll/Manager my Device(s) 

Navigate to multifactor.newschool.edu

2. Enter your NetID email address and click "Next" 

Please note that email aliases are not accepted.

3. Enter your New School password and click "Log in"

4. Click "Next" through the Duo welcome screens

5. Select a multi-factor authentication option 

Duo Mobile is the recommended option - this will require you to download the Duo mobile app for Apple or Android devices.  

Alternatively, you can select get a text message or phone call

6. Enter the phone number of the device you want to receive multi-factor authentication requests and click "Add phone number"

7. Verify that phone number entered is correct 

If text or phone call is the option, you chose for set up you will receive an authentication alert with the method you have chosen. Follow the prompts on screen for text or phone.

8. Download the Duo mobile app 

Duo Mobile is an app that runs on your smartphone and helps you authenticate quickly and easily. Without it, you will still be able to log in using a phone call, but for the best experience, we recommend that you use the Duo Mobile app. 

Follow the platform-specific instructions on the screen to install the Duo Mobile app. After installing the app, return to the enrollment window. 

If you are enrolling a landline, you do not have to install the app. 

Please note that the Duo mobile app will request access to your camera. Please enable access so that it can be used to scan the QR code. 

9. Click "Next"

10. Open the Duo mobile app on your phone 

11. Tap "Add+"

12. Tap Use QR Code

13. Scan the QR code on the multi-factor screen with your Duo mobile app 

The QR code below is only an example and is NOT the QR code you should scan to activate your device. Please scan the QR code that is provided to you when going through the setup process at multifactor.newschool.edu.

14. Save the account in the Duo mobile app

15. Your device is now registered 

Click continue to use multi-factor authentication.

Enroll device via SSO 

If you do not enroll a device during the enrollment period, you will be prompted to enroll a device the next time you log into a service that requires multi-factor authentication. If you are prompted during log in via Single Sign-on, please follow these steps.  

1. Click "Start Setup"

2. Choose Your Authentication Device Type 

Select the type of device you would like to enroll and click "Continue". We recommend using a smartphone for the best experience, but you can also enroll a landline telephone, or iOS/Android tablets.

3. Enter Your Phone Number 

Select your country from the drop-down list and enter your phone number. Use the number of your smartphone, landline, or cell phone that you will have with you when you are logging in to a Duo-protected service. You can enter an extension if you choose "Landline" in the previous step. 

Double-check that you entered it correctly, check the box, and click "Continue".

4. Choose Platform 

Choose your device's operating system and click "Continue".

5. Install Duo Mobile 

Duo Mobile is an app that runs on your smartphone and helps you authenticate quickly and easily. Without it, you will still be able to log in using a phone call or text message, but for the best experience, we recommend that you use Duo Mobile. 

Follow the platform-specific instructions on the screen to install Duo Mobile. After installing the app return to the enrollment window. 

If you are enrolling a landline, you do not have to install the app.

6. Activate Duo Mobile 

On iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone activate Duo Mobile by scanning the QR code with the app's built-in barcode scanner. Follow the platform-specific instructions for your device. The "Continue" button will become clickable after you scan the barcode successfully.

7. Your device is now registered 

Select the authentication method for access to applications requiring multi-factor authentication. We recommend choosing “Ask me to choose an authentication method” to start with. Once you have used the Duo app a few times, you can change the setting to suit your preference.

Security Key 

A security key is a physical hardware device that either connects directly into your laptop via a USB port or connects to your phone via available ports or near field communication (NFC). These keys require the user to touch the key for multi-factor authentication approval.  

*Please note IT Central does not sell security keys. 

1. Contact IT Central to initiate setup 

Once you have a security key, you must first contact IT Central to be provided the appropriate access for using the key. IT Central will send you an email once you have been provided the appropriate access. 

2. Insert the security key into your device 

If you are setting up the security key using NFC, have the security key ready to bring close to the device when prompted.  

3. Go to the Duo Enrollment and Device Management Site and click Enroll/Manager my Device(s) 

Once access is provided, go to multifactor.newschool.edu to begin enrolling the device 

4. Enter your NetID email address and click "Next" 

Please note that email aliases are not accepted. 

5. Enter your New School password and click "Log in" 

If prompted, click "Next" through the Duo welcome screens. 

*If you already have a device enrolled with Duo, use that device to approve the multi-factor authentication to get to the Duo device manager. 

6. Select the Security Key multi-factor option

7. Click Continue to add security key 

If using NFC, after clicking Continue you will see a prompt on your device asking if you would like to use the security key. If you want to use the security key using NFC, bring it close to your device where the NFC reader is located. NFC readers can be in various locations depending on your device. Please refer to your device's specifications to determine where the NFC reader is located. You can then skip steps 8 and 9.

8. Select USB security key

9. Touch your security key when prompted

10. Your security key will then be set up. Click Continue to return to device manager
