How to Set Up Duo

This step-by-step guide shows you how to enroll and manage devices in Duo Security using multi-factor authentication.

Have you already set up Duo for phone calls & text messages? You should be using Duo mobile or a Security Key instead

Phone calls and text codes are the least secure ways to authenticate into New School systems. It is best to set up more secure options like Duo mobile or a Security Key.

To add a new method of verifying your identity log in to multifactor.newschool.edu with your NetID email and New School password, verify your identity with a Duo authentication method, and once in the Duo Device Manager click "Add a device" and follow one of the options for set up below.

Duo takes you through the steps of adding the new device, just like first-time enrollment. The difference between adding a new device from device management and during first-time enrollment is that when you have finished enrolling the new device you return to the device management page to view all your registered devices, including the new one, instead of continuing to log into an application.

Setting up Duo Mobile App

1. Go to the Duo Enrollment and Device Management Site and click Enroll/Manager my Device(s)

Setting up a Security Key

A security key is a physical hardware device that either connects directly into your laptop via a USB port or connects to your phone via available ports or near field communication (NFC). These keys require the user to touch the key for multi-factor authentication approval.

IT Central can provide a security key where required. Please reach out to IT Central directly at itcentral@newschool.edu to request one.

1. Contact IT Central to initiate setup

Once you have a security key, you must first contact IT Central to be provided the appropriate access for using the key. IT Central will send you an email once you have been provided the appropriate access.

2. Insert the security key into your device

If you are setting up the security key using NFC, have the security key ready to bring close to the device when prompted.

3. Go to the Duo Enrollment and Device Management Site and click Enroll/Manager my Device(s)

Once access is provided, go to multifactor.newschool.edu to begin enrolling the device

4. Enter your NetID email address and click "Next"

Please note that email aliases are not accepted.

5. Enter your New School password and click "Log in"

If prompted, click "Next" through the Duo welcome screens.

*If you already have a device enrolled with Duo, use that device to approve the multi-factor authentication to get to the Duo device manager and "Add a device".

6. Select the Security Key multi-factor option

If you want to use the security key using NFC, bring it close to your device where the NFC reader is located. NFC readers can be in various locations depending on your device. Please refer to your device's specifications to determine where the NFC reader is located. You can then skip steps 8 and 9.

To keep information secure, The New School requires that all students and employees use multi-factor authentication when accessing certain university systems that may contain sensitive and/or Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This additional layer of security ensures that even if your password information is compromised, there is a second step of verification to help prevent unauthorized account access.
