How to Write Gem Instructions

Provide details about your goals, desired behaviors, and preferred format to help the Gem personalize Gemini's responses.

The main areas to consider when writing good Gem instructions are the same as writing good prompts. You don't need to use all four, but using a few will help:

Persona

Tell your Gem what role to play and how to respond.

Task

Tell the Gem what you want Gemini to do or create.

Context

Provide as much background as possible.

Format

Be specific when specifying desired structure.

Use Gemini to help write your instructions

Gems can provide more custom responses and guidance when they have clear, detailed instructions. When you create your Gem, you can use Gemini to help re-write and expand on your instructions.

  1. In the instructions box, write a sentence or two describing your goal.

  2. Click Use Gemini to re-write instructions (pencil button).

  3. Review and edit the instructions.

    • Tip: On the right, you can enter a prompt to preview your Gem. After you preview the Gem, make sure to click Save. Using the preview window does not automatically save your Gem.

  4. Click Save.

Upload files to give your Gem more context

You can add files to give your Gem more context or to reference specific docs in your chats with the Gem.

  1. After adding instructions, click Add files.

  2. Choose a file to upload for your Gem.

    • To upload a file from your device: Click Upload files.

    • To add a file from your Google Drive: Click Drive.

      • To add files from your Drive, you need to have Gemini Apps Activity on and connect Google Workspace to Gemini Apps. If it’s not connected, you'll get the option to connect it.
